Equine Health: My Best Advice*

After 23+ years of practicing medicine, I’ve learned a thing or two about equine health management - here’s my best advice:

  1. ACT EARLY on problems.
  2. PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE is your best strategy.
  3. REGULAR EXERCISE ... otherwise rest & rust.
  4. WEIGHT MANAGEMENT is paramount.
  5. DIET - high quality, appropriate amount & frequency.
  6. DENTAL CARE - examine & float teeth every 6 to 12 months!
  7. VACCINES - DO NOT over-vaccinate!; report/treat reactions early & aggressively
  8. REGULAR, CO-ORDINATED DEWORMING - rotate dewormers; fecals keep score
  9. CHONDROPROTECTIVE MEDICATIONS for joint health recommended once-a-year
  10. EMERGENCY KIT - well-stocked & at-the-ready, for your horse and for you!
  11. SECOND OPINIONS - if you and/or the vet are in doubt.
  12. DEATH IS COMING - some day, one day ... act accordingly.
  13. ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE - because is death is coming ... enjoy “the now”.
  14. REALITY - run away from it & you‘ll eventually run into it.
  15. NO MIRACLE CURES - so sorry to report this, but ...
  16. PAY YOUR VET - sorry, had to add this one.
  17. RAINY DAY FUND - for emergencies, you’ll need it to have best options.
  18. HAVE MORE THAN ONE VET OPTION - just in case ...
  19. WATER ACCESS ALWAYS - dehydration is bad!
  20. VENTILIATION for respiratory health - don’t fear a breeze!
  21. EMERGENCY NUMBER LIST - vets, farriers, trailoring, etc.
  22. PANIC - no matter what happens, try to avoid it because it’s harmful, not helpful.
  23. BASIC VITAL SIGNS - learn to assess your horse’s vitals - you can do it!
  24. BARN POLITICS - far too common & probably bad for your health!
  25. NEVER STOP LEARNING! There’s no excuse for ignorance - you’ve got the ‘net!
  26. RESPECT MEDICAL PRIVACY AT THE BARN - no one likes a nosey neighbour.

Red stop sign.

The Veterinarian’s Oath

When I graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College way back in 2000, I and my fellow classmates swore to adhere to and uphold the sacred Veterinarian’s Oath. Since those early days, I have strived very hard to remain faithful to its guiding principles.

Below is a picture of the actual document I held in my hands when I swore my oath.
